AIS (Automatic Identification System)

AIS (Automatic Identification System) is the VHF radio system vessels use to continuously broadcast their identity (MMSI, IMO number), position, speed over ground, course, and navigational status. Terrestrial receivers and satellites pick up these broadcasts, which form the backbone of vessel tracking. Axiom Overwatch normalizes AIS streams, detects gaps (dark events), and fuses positions with port events, registry data, and cargo signals.
